I'm pretty sure that Momofuku Milk Bar in New York, NY created this phenomenon, which can be found in their book, Momofuku Milk Bar. One of the blogs I follow did a post featuring a recipe from this book, instructing how to make pretzel milk into ice cream; I almost fainted when I read it. Pretzel Ice Cream Pie, encased in a sweet and salty pretzel crust, with homemade magic shell topping? Get the smelling salts, woman down!

| (A handful of pretzels in the corner of the pan have not been roasted, I wanted to show how they compare to the roasted ones, in term of color.) |
Several weeks later, another blog I follow made pancakes using pretzel milk. Pretzel. Milk. Pancakes. (I have no words....none).
So all this, coupled with my desire to spruce up our weekend morning tea, lead me to the idea for the use of pretzel milk in a latte. (Cone of safety: I was just going to make the pretzel milk and drink it, straight up...come on, like you didn't think of doing this!).

| For those who know me, be impressed that there was no spilt milk while taking this pour shot. ~impressed~ |
Since I had leftover pretzels...might as well dip them in some chocolate; Double Decker Dipped Pretzels: milk chocolate dipped pretzels atop white chocolate dipped pretzels. Pretzel-on-pretzel action.
Since I made Double Decker Chocolate Cover Pretzels...might as well add one into my frothed pretzel milk.
You can definitely taste the pretzels in this warmed, frothy tea latte. If you are looking for an excuse to make pretzel milk, here it is. I prefer more tea than milk in my tea lattes...which technically makes them less latte-ish and just tea with a little frothed milk...so, just adjust the amounts to your liking...there are no rules here! If you want to get crazy...drop in 2-3 chocolate chips into your hot mug o' latte and swirl.
Pretzel Milk Latte, pretzel milk adapted from recipe featured in the Momofuku Milk Bar book & from this pancake recipe.
makes 2 ~ 16oz lattes
For The Pretzel Milk
3 cups pretzels
1 1/2 cups milk, I used skim
Preheat oven to 350 degrees and line a sheet pan with foil or parchment paper.
Spread pretzels on pan in a single layer; bake for 10-15 minutes until darkened in color and fragrant (my oven took 13 minutes to achieve this). Cool completely.
Transfer cooled pretzels to a bowl; pour milk over pretzels. If necessary, crush a few times so milk covers pretzels. Let sit for 10 minutes. Strain milk, discard soggy pretzels.
For The Latte
16oz fresh brewed tea or coffee
pretzel milk
sweetener of choice
2-3 chocolate chips per mug, optional
Heat the pretzel milk until scalding, transfer into a quart sized mason jar, cover with lid. Wrap jar in a towel and shake vigorously to froth milk. Shake until doubled in volume.
Pour 8oz of prepared tea or coffee into 2 large mugs, sweeten to your liking. Top with frothed milk and chocolate chips.
Double Decker Chocolate Covered Pretzels optional, but totally recommended.

ReplyDeleteSue, if you think you can handle it. As soon as I acquire an ice cream maker I am making that pie!
DeleteThis is new to me! have to process . . .
ReplyDeleteJeannine, you must try it. The shiny, salty exterior of the pretzels dissolve into the milk; it is wonderful in coffee or tea.
